Capital is next on the European Commission’s list of harmonization and integration targets. Due to be completed by 2019, the Capital Markets Union (CMU) would break down remaining barriers to the free flow of capital in the EU and make it easier for pension funds and insurance companies to invest in companies. Expanding the range of financing options would benefit businesses seeking capital for expansion, especially small- and medium-sized enterprises, and address Europe’s over-reliance on bank lending.

JONATHAN HILL, European Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Markets and Capital Markets Union, discussed his plans for Capital Markets Union with Pierre Briançon, senior POLITICO correspondent.
