New Yorker hires Jezebel deputy editor Jia Tolentino as web staff writer

The New Yorker has hired Jezebel deputy editor Jia Tolentino as a staff writer for NewYorker.com, Jezebel editor in chief Emma Carmichael announced in a memo to staff on Friday. Tolentino's last day at Jezebel will be July 8.

"Jia's great. She's a graceful — often hilarious — stylist, an obsessive reader, a diligent reporter, and someone whose writing I've enjoyed for a long time," NewYorker.com editor Nicholas Thompson told POLITICO in a Twitter direct message. "We couldn't be happier that she's joining our team."

Tolentino said that her decision to leave was unrelated to Jezebel parent company Gawker Media's decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on June 10. Tolentino published her first piece for NewYorker.com on June 2. Shortly after, she interviewed for a full-time position.

"The possibility came out of nowhere last Monday [June 6], and I interviewed last Thursday, and I came out that day knowing that I needed to take the job if I got it," Tolentino wrote in a memo to Jezebel staff. "In other words, last Friday's news has essentially nothing to do with this — I say essentially because the timing of the offer does feel wild to me in a way that the bankruptcy itself does not."

Tolentino is the second high-profile staffer to leave Gawker this week. On Monday, Gawker.com senior writer Sam Biddle announced that he was joining First Look Media's The Intercept. Biddle said that his decision to leave was also unrelated to the bankruptcy.

From 2013 to 2014, Tolentino worked alongside Carmichael as an editor at The Hairpin, The Awl's women's interest site. After Carmichael was named editor in chief of Jezebel in 2014, Tolentino joined Jezebel as features editor. She replaced Erin Gloria Ryan as deputy editor when Ryan left for Vocativ late last year.
