Rupert Murdoch is lighting some fire under Michael Bloomberg to mount an independent bid for president.
“This is Bloomberg’s last chance. You never know until your hat is in the ring! Events change everything, especially during elections. Nomination,” the News Corp mogul tweeted Wednesday.
Bloomberg has reportedly set March as a deadline to decide on an independent run and is more likely to take the leap if the candidates at the “extremes” prevail, as in Donald Trump, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz or Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
When news first broke last weekend that Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor who founded and now runs Bloomberg L.P., was considering a run, Murdoch tweeted about what he thought the run could mean.
“Allegedly Bloomberg again considering running. If he does, may hurt Clinton more than Trump. Seems 2016 the year for populists,” Murdoch tweeted.
Murdoch’s interest in Bloomberg isn’t new. In August Murdoch issued a call for Bloomberg to run via Twitter. “With Trump becoming very serious candidate, it’s time for next billionaire candidate, Mike Bloomberg to step into ring. Greatest mayor,” Murdoch tweeted.
Bloomberg was a Democrat before switching to the Republican party as he ran for mayor.
