Technology standards are the glue holding together our increasingly hyper-connected world, even if they seem too technical for non-experts. In future, billions of devices and applications will need to talk to each other to realize the potential of the digital economy. Standards have been key drivers of wireless technology, and the right standards system is essential for the EU to achieve a Digital Single Market.

What is needed is an open ecosystem based on the best connectivity technology and which businesses can use to deliver their products and services. Intellectual property rules for standards need to encourage R&D and investment while ensuring reasonable access to the resulting standards. The right policy framework will provide an incentive for the best technologies to become standardized. Recent EU case law has underlined that an optimal standards system should encourage innovators and implementers to reach agreements on fair and non-discriminatory terms.

With rapid growth of the Internet of Things and work underway on 5G, the next generation mobile phone standard, the right policy framework is needed to maximize their potential.

Join POLITICO for an in-depth conversation on the importance of standards and how to ensure that Europe is a standards-maker, not a standards-taker.
