Energy Visions – Innovation: the Way to a Low-Carbon Economy?

Energy Visions – Innovation: the Way to a Low-Carbon Economy?

20160620-_DSC7018

Cutting greenhouse gas emissions isn’t just about reducing the pollution being pumped out of smokestacks and tailpipes — it’s also about technological solutions to drive economic growth while slashing CO2. The EU has been on the cutting edge of a number of low carbon technologies but in recent years competitors from China, the U.S. and elsewhere have eaten into the renewable energy market.

EU policymakers are aware of the need for innovation policies to help achieve the target of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030. One proposal is to create an Innovation Fund from the sale of emissions rights for energy sector innovation and modernization. The EU’s Horizon 2020 research program has also earmarked over €20 billion for climate, energy and transport technology research in 2014 to 2020.

  • What contribution can EU-funded research make to reducing greenhouse gas emissions?
  • What technologies offer the best way to cut emissions and provide Europe with a competitive edge in the fields of low-carbon energy technologies?
  • Does the EU have the right innovation policies in place to deliver necessary greenhouse gas reductions in time?
