Steven Maijoor, Chair, ESMA
Steven Maijoor
Steven Maijoor is the Chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). He took up office in 2011 as the first chair of the Authority, appointed for 5 year term. He represents the Authority and is responsible for chairing ESMA’s Board of Supervisors and Management Board.
Prior to this, Maijoor was Managing Director at the AFM, the Dutch financial markets regulator. During his term, the scope of activities of the AFM vastly expanded and he was responsible for building and implementing supervision in the capital market area. Maijoor’s international positions also included the Chairmanship of IFIAR (International Forum of Independent Audit Regulators).
Previously, Maijoor was Dean of the School of Business and Economics at Maastricht University. His career in academia included positions in Maastricht University and the University of Southern California.
He holds a Ph.D. from Maastricht University, was a research student at the London School of Economics, and has a Masters from the University of Groningen.
