Boehner: Obamacare delay a ‘joke’

Speaker John Boehner sharply criticized the White House on Wednesday for again delaying Obamacare, intimating that President Barack Obama was flouting the law.

“What the hell is this? A joke?” the Ohio Republican said. “Another deadline made meaningless. If he hasn’t put enough loopholes in the law already, the administration is now resorting to an honor system to enforce it.”

The White House announced late Tuesday a two-week delay for individuals who have not been able to finish signing up for the law. The deadline was originally March 31.

Republicans quickly criticized the delay as another misstep for Obamacare, which has struggled to recover from a botched rollout in October and lower-than-expected enrollment numbers.

Boehner said Obama is skirting the law by extending the deadline without congressional approval.

“The law says that enrollment ends at the end of March. That is what the law says. I have to live by the law … and guess what, the president needs to live by the law as well,” he said.

The White House said the extension was because of a surge in enrollments. More than 5 million people have signed up through the exchanges, but that number falls short of the administration’s 7 million goal.

“Open enrollment ends March 31. We are experiencing a surge in demand and are making sure that we will be ready to help consumers who may be in line by the deadline to complete enrollment — either online or over the phone,” Joanne Peters, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Services, told POLITICO.

Boehner said House Republican leadership is still planning to offer Obamacare alternatives, but he did not provide a concrete timeline when new legislation would be introduced.

“Our goal is to show the American people what we believe would work better. I believe we will,” he said. “We’ll continue to roll them out as we develop them.”
