Report: Twitter working on edit feature for tweets

Twitter is working on a feature that would allow users to edit their tweets after posting them, Matthew Keys reports.

Currently, users can delete a tweet only after it has posted but not edit its contents. This new feature will be present for a limited amount of time and will allow a user to make only “slight changes” to the contents of a tweet, such a removing a word, correcting a typo or adding one or two additional words, Keys reports. Only one edit per tweet would be allowed, and once the edit is made, it would be immediately visible on that user’s Twitter feed and in retweets.

"Twitter wants users to be able to immediately help debunk rumors or incorrect reports that they, themselves, may cause by updating a tweet to read 'unconfirmed,'  'confirmed,' or 'retracted,' which would certainly change the meaning of the tweet overall," Keys reports. "To solve this problem, Twitter is looking at a few things, including limitations on how many characters or words a user would be allowed to insert or delete."

Keys reports that the company "is also developing an 'editorial algorithm' that, if it works correctly, would be able to 'detect' whether or not a user is attempting to change the overall intention of the tweet instead of fixing a minor mistake or retracting an erroneous report."

The new feature could be rolled out in as little as a few weeks, most likely at first to verified news organizations, celebrities and organizations. For many news organizations, the change would be a welcome one, especially during fluid breaking-news situations like the Boston Marathon bombings this year.

A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment on Keys's report.
