The communications firm Levick is buying the public affairs shop founded by lobbyist Lanny Davis and former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele.

Davis — a Clinton White House attorney-turned-political consultant — will hold the title of executive vice president at Levick. Steele will work as a senior strategist on state and local government issues for the firm.

In buying Steele and Davis’s firm, Purple Nation Solutions, Levick will expand its communications, advocacy and government affairs offerings to include Davis’s expertise as a practicing attorney, crisis communications strategist and lobbyist.

“My focus is very oriented towards legislative solutions that are bipartisan,” Davis said in an interview about his work at Purple Nation.

“We’re proudly developing a lobbying approach that focuses on purple, bipartisan solutions — not just knocking on doors and talking to Democrats if you’re a Democrat, or Republicans if you’re a Republican,” Davis added.

He will keep his law firm Lanny J. Davis & Associates as a separate company, though he may refer some firm business to Levick for nonlegal work. Steele will also stay in his role as an MSNBC contributor.

Eleanor McManus — who co-founded Purple Nation Solutions with Davis and Steele — will join Levick as a senior vice president. She previously served 11 years as senior producer on CNN’s “Larry King Live.”

It’s the second major expansion of Levick’s advocacy offerings in recent weeks. The firm made its first foray into the lobbying space with the hiring of four former government relations staffers from the now-shuttered firm Dow Lohnes Government Strategies.

Former Dow Lohnes partner Rick Kessler jumped to Levick to lead the new lobbying group in January, bringing Michael Scrivner, Jessica Lenard and Pete Leon with him.

The firm’s recent moves are all aimed at bringing a team that can tackle problems at the intersection of law, legislation, politics and media.

“What we’re doing is providing solutions — whether you’re in crisis, whether you’re in a regulatory or legislative battle or it’s your brand that needs help,” Mark Irion, president of Levick, said in an interview. “We’re not just spinmeisters putting out clever messages. We’re really trying to help our clients get to their business objectives.”

In addition to his foreign client work, Davis has represented clients like Penn State University, Macy’s, the Washington Redskins, Martha Stewart, Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.), Whole Foods, Royal Caribbean, Starbucks and others.

Steele led the RNC from 2009-11 before being replaced by current Chairman Reince Priebus. Prior to that, he was the lieutenant governor of Maryland in Gov. Bob Ehrlich’s administration.
