Limbaugh: Katrina line doesn’t work

Rush Limbaugh would like people to stop calling the immigration crisis “Obama’s Katrina” for one simple reason: While George W. Bush didn’t cause the hurricane, Obama caused the border crisis, Limbaugh said.

“This Katrina comparison has got to stop,” the conservative talk radio host said on his show Thursday, according to a transcript. “And I’ll tell you where the Katrina comparison falls apart. George Bush did not cause that hurricane. Barack Obama responsible for this.”

Republicans and Democrats alike have used the “Obama’s Katrina” analogy for the president’s refusal to visit the border while on a trip to Texas — referencing then-president Bush’s response to the devastating 2005 hurricane. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), who has been openly critical of the president on the immigration issue, has used the analogy multiple times over the past few days. Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry, another sharp critic, pushed the metaphor on Fox News on Wednesday.

“You talk about photo ops and trying to seek political advantage, making this into a Katrina, why do that?” Limbaugh said. “The only reason to do that is to once again hearken back to how ineffective they think Bush was. Because that is the primary, I think maybe the only thing this administration still has going for it.”

The White House responded to the analogy by rejecting the likeness of a humanitarian crisis to a natural disaster, and saying that the administration had been on top of the situation from the first.
