Gawker promotes Caity Weaver to senior editor

Gawker Media has promoted Caity Weaver from a staff writer to a senior editor at Gawker.com, editor Max Read announced in a staff memo this afternoon.

Weaver joined Gawker.com as a night writer three years ago, shortly after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania.

Her distinct voice—especially in Gawker.com's celebrity coverage—has made her one of the most popular writers at the site among commenters there, and made her among the writers that garner the most traffic for the site. She has written an advice column for the site, covered a Paula Deen-themed cruise, once spent 14 hours at a T.G.I.F. restaurant for a post.

Check out Read's memo below:

Hi everyone--

Please join me in congratulating Caity Weaver, as of right now a senior editor at Gawker.

Caity is of course a sui generis talent, a terrifically intelligent, scathingly funny writer who manages to be perceptive, subtle, and surprising on an internet that has recently seemed unable to make use of any of those values. But she's also shown herself over the last several months--as anyone who has worked on a post with her knows--to be a rigorous editor with an expert feel for language and tone. It's time to recognize that expanded role.

This doesn't mean Caity will stop writing--far from it--just that we'll make better use of her editorial talents (there are few posts that can't be improved by a Caity headline, at the very least). For now, she'll largely be continuing her excellent stewardship of our celebrity and entertainment coverage, assigning and editing on Defamer, but I expect her to be an important editorial voice across all sections and on the main page, and I encourage you to make use of her capabilities and talents starting now.

Let me know if you have any questions.
