POLITICO’s Cities4Climate 2020 series will explore projects, innovations and synergies driving sustainable cities to success. How can cities become more socially, environmentally and economically sustainable? How can they put in place intelligent transport and energy networks? How can ICTs and Big Data be leveraged to create jobs, growth and a better quality of life for citizens?

The Cities4Climate 2020 series will showcase specific projects and initiatives that foster smart and sustainable growth in global cities to meet the 2020 deadline established through the Paris Climate Agreement: intelligent mobility, smart energy, connected administration and urban planning.

The first event of this series will be:

March 22 – Sustainable Transport and Energy Networks: Reinventing the Wheel

Cities are shaped by their transport systems, which need robust and competitive smart energy networks in order to be sustainable. Moreover, sustainable transport policies have a great impact at the local level and in many cases are actually driven by local policy actions. While the decisions taken at the European level will be in place for years to come, the actions that cities are taking today can dramatically impact the global outlook for the future of a sustainable planet and the international climate agreement’s 2020 stocktaking milestone.

Questions to be addressed will include:

  • How can cities put in place intelligent mobility solutions, both public and private? What can be done before 2020?
  • How can these projects be financed for a sustainable future?
  • Which cities are leading the way? How can global cities learn from each other and share good practices?
  • Are the innovations already available or do we need to reinvent the wheel?
  • What can Europe gain at the local level in moving people and goods more sustainably?
