President Barack Obama found out once again this week that if there are microphones near by, there’s a good chance the tape is rolling. Here’s POLITICO’s look back at some presidential hot mic moments:

1. “After my election I have more flexibility.”

This week, what was supposed to be a private exchange between Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had Republicans fired up. “On all these issues, particularly on missile defense, this, this can be solved but it’s important for him to give me space,” Obama said. “This is my last election. After my election, I have more flexibility.”

2. Obama: Kanye’s a “jackass”

After Kanye West stormed the stage at the 2009 MTV Music Awards and stole Taylor Swift’s moment in the spotlight, Obama said during what was supposed to be an off-the-record portion of a CNBC interview, that the singer had acted like a “jackass.”

3. Bush to Hezbollah: “Stop doing this s——”

The crisis in the Middle East had former President George W. Bush uttering an expletive to then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2006. “See, the irony is what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit and it’s over.”

4. Behind Bibi’s back

The following exchange about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was picked up by microphones at the G-20 summit last year:

Nicolas Sarkozy: “I cannot bear Netanyahu, he’s a liar.”

Obama: “You’re fed up with him, but I have to deal with him even more often than you.”

5. Bush calls New York Times reporter a “major league a—hole”

At a Labor Day rally in Sept. 2000, then-presidential candidate George W. Bush was heard badmouthing the New York Times’ Adam Clymer. “Major league asshole,” was what Bush called the reporter.

6. “Cling to guns or religion”

When Obama was running for president, his comments at a San Francisco fundraiser about small-town Pennsylvania caused an uproar: “And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

7. Obama to GOP: “You think we’re stupid?’

The president revealed his version of the closed-door negotiations with Republicans to avert a government shut down last year. The audio, overheard by CBS News, caught Obama saying, “I said: ‘You want to repeal health care? Go at it. We’ll have that debate. You’re not going to be able to do that by nickel-and-diming me in the budget. You think we’re stupid?’”

8. Attention, Russia: “We begin bombing in five minutes”

“My fellow Americans, I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.” President Ronald Reagan said these words in 1984 — but only as a joke. Reagan made the comments in jest before delivering his weekly radio address to the nation.
