OFA e-mails for Cuomo

Organizing for America, the Democratic National Committee's offspring of Barack Obama's grass-roots effort from the 2008 campaign, is e-mailing its New York members in support of gubernatorial hopeful Andrew Cuomo today, a Democratic source says.

It establishes Cuomo as a part of the national party's movement but, more importantly, serves to try to fire up the party's base in a state where there's been a noticeable level of voter apathy so far this cycle. Cuomo boosters have said privately they're worried about sluggish turnout.

While Cuomo is widely seen as the probable winner in November, there is little sense of a movement at work among the Democratic base, in part thanks to the incredibly lopsided public polling against Republicans Rick Lazio and Carl Paladino. There has also been concern among some of the state's black leaders about the all-white ticket and questions about an urban agenda — although his aides months ago told the Albany Times Union one is coming.

Cuomo is known to want a strong mandate heading into office, and the voter network the president established could help.

Here's the e-mail:

Friend —

Andrew Cuomo has always been a strong voice for New Yorkers.

As attorney general, he's taken on corruption in government and the private sector, leading investigations into consumer rip-offs by banks and insurance companies and taking on pension corruption and Medicaid fraud.

He has brought reform to industries that have abused the public trust, recovering billions of dollars for New Yorkers. And he's gone toe-to-toe with the special interests and partisan forces that preserve the status quo in Albany.

As governor, Andrew Cuomo will continue to fight the dysfunction, scandal and gridlock that have paralyzed New York for far too long.

You can help bring accountability and integrity back to Albany.

Will you join his campaign?<http://ny.barackobama.com/NYCuomo>

The challenges we face in Albany are clear: Government is being held hostage by lobbyists and special interests that are not accountable to the people of New York.

At a time when we urgently need our lawmakers to create jobs and revitalize the economy, they can't break free from the status quo.

Andrew Cuomo has a plan that lays out exactly how New Yorkers can fight back — from providing for independent investigations that crack down on corruption to outlawing Pay to Play where individuals and corporations who do business with the state have inappropriate access.

New York used to be a national model for good government, and it can be again.

Join Andrew Cuomo and fight for all New Yorkers — especially those who can't fight for themselves.
