RNC chief sees no brokered convention

Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus is swatting away notions of a brokered presidential nomination convention -- despite heightened speculation that the GOP was heading for a fight this August in Tampa.

“I don’t see that happening,” said Priebus, who is celebrating his 40th birthday on Sunday, on CBS’s “Face the Nation. “One of these four candidates will be our nominee.”

The chairman said that the RNC was not currently making any plans for a brokered convention in August, although the committee has rules in place to handle any possible situation.

“We’re only at halftime,” Priebus added. “We will have a nominee fairly soon.”

The New York Times reported Sunday that Republicans are preparing for the chance that no presidential hopeful will have the 1,144 delegates necessary to win the nomination outright – which would mark the first convention fight since 1976.
