Dodai Stewart leaves Jezebel for Fusion

Jezebel deputy editor Dodai Stewart is leaving the Gawker Media site to become Director of Culture Coverage at Fusion, digital editor-in-chief Jane Spencer announced in a note to staff today.

Buzzfeed media reporter Myles Tanzer first reported the news that Stewart was heading to Fusion earlier today on Twitter.

In going to Fusion, Stewart is following the example of Anna Holmes, the founder and former E.I.C. of Jezebel, who was named Fusion's Digital Voices editor in May. Stewart will work under Spencer, who joined Fusion from The Wall Street Journal in July.

Stewart said she plans to hire a staff of culture reporters: "I'm a pop culture junkie, and the culture will be covering music and TV and movies and Vine and Youtube, street art, photography, dance, all that stuff," she said.

She was attracted to Fusion because of the company's recent hires, including her former boss Holmes.

Stewart joined Jezebel in July 2007, shortly after Holmes founded the site. Some Jezebel staffers expected that Stewart would be named Jezebel's next E.I.C. earlier this year, when then-E.I.C. Jessica Coen announced she would step down.

Instead, Gawker Media named Emma Carmichael, the editor of The Awl's women's blog The Hairpin, as Coen's successor. After being passed over for the top position, Stewart told Capital that she was considering whether to stay at Jezebel or leave the site.

“I like my job, and I’m considering what my options are,” she said at the time.

Since Carmichael took over Jezebel on Sept. 12, a number of Jezebel staffers have left and been replaced. Features editor Tracie Egan Morrissey and editorial assistant Callie Beusman departed for Vice Media, and staff writer Lindy West joined GQ.

On Sept. 18, Carmichael announced three new hires: Jia Tolentino—who worked with Carmichael at The Hairpin—was named features editor; Julianne Escobedo Shepherd was named culture editor; and Clover Hope was hired as a staff writer.

I am thrilled to share some exciting news about our growing team at Fusion.

First, I am excited to announce that Dodai Stewart is joining Fusion as Director of Culture Coverage. Dodai is known for her smart, irreverent, and often hilarious takes on pop culture, women’s issues and race. She’ll bring her tremendous creativity and wit to Fusion, as she heads up our coverage of entertainment, fashion, and the arts.

Dodai most recently served as Deputy Editor of Jezebel, the influential women's site known for its analysis of gender politics in pop culture and fashion. She was part of the founding editorial team of the site in 2007 with Fusion’s Anna Holmes, and helped build it into a cultural force with 18 million readers a month.

Prior to joining Jezebel, she was the executive editor of J-14 magazine. She has also written for numerous outlets like Entertainment Weekly, Glamour, Modern Bride and the New York Times. Dodai honed her storytelling skills as a screenwriting major at Tisch School of the Arts, which she attended after graduating from The Bronx High School of Science.

Dodai (and her amazing laugh) will be based in New York, but she’ll work closely with colleagues in Miami.

I also want to introduce you to few other new faces who have joined us recently.

Lorenzo Serna starts this week as Senior Digital Producer. Lorenzo will be a key player on our team pioneering new live broadcasting techniques. He will work closely with Tim Pool, our Director of Media Innovation, to coordinate Fusion’s coverage of breaking news events. Lorenzo, who has a background in grassroots media, will also report on youth protest movements, with a focus on indigenous rights and climate issues. He’s based in New York.

As many of you already know, Rob Wile recently joined Fusion from Business Insider as our Business Reporter. He will cover a wide range of topics for Fusion including energy, climate change, and economics. In addition to writing, Rob will bring visual elements to our daily coverage, including charts and data visualizations. Rob is based in Miami.

And finally, Rollie Williams has come on board as a consultant in New York. Rollie was on the founding team at Upworthy, where he worked as an editorial curator. Rollie has a background in improv, sketch, and standup comedy, and is helping us develop comedy content.

Our growing team is not only helping Fusion tackle the issues that matter most to young, diverse audiences — but is positioned to do so in innovative, new ways.

Please join me in welcoming Dodai, Lorenzo, Rob and Rollie.
