Time shuffles masthead

Time editor Nancy Gibbs announced a number of staffing changes in a staff memo this afternoon.

Matt Vella and Sam Jacobs, formerly senior editors, have been promoted to assistant managing editors. Vella will oversee the magazine's business and technology unit, as well as develop new print and digital features. Jacobs will continue to help Edward Felsenthal, Time.com managing editor, supervise the site's day-to-day operations. He will also manage what Gibbs called "an exciting new initiative to expand our long-form digital features" and collaborate with Time's interactive team.

It is with great pleasure that I announce the promotions of Matt Vella and Sam Jacobs to Assistant Managing Editors. In a remarkably short time, each of them has become a transformational leader at TIME, and each will be taking on new responsibilities in his new role. I’m also happy to announce that Kelly Conniff is promoted to Senior Editor, Special Projects, Mia Tramz is promoted to Multimedia Editor and Daniel D'Addario is joining us as a Staff Writer.

In little more than a year, Sam Jacobs has made immense contributions to TIME—laying the groundwork for our global continuous news operation, identifying and recruiting extraordinary new talent and raising the bar on our journalism online and in print. In his new role, he will continue to work with Edward Felsenthal in managing the site day-to-day. He will also oversee an exciting new initiative to expand our long-form digital features, and he will work closely with the interactive team on a host of new projects. Sam came to TIME from Reuters, where he was national political correspondent. Before that, he edited the front of the book at Newsweek and covered politics as a staff reporter for The Daily Beast, where he focused on politics, culture and keeping Massachusetts senators on their toes. He graduated from Harvard, where he studied History. And, we can't be certain, but we suspect that Sam is the youngest assistant managing editor in the history of TIME.

Matt Vella joined us a year ago to lead business and tech coverage across all our platforms, and that coverage quickly became a model for our integration, with traffic to both verticals up exponentially since Matt took the reins. From shepherding breaking news coverage to bylining his first cover story with Lev Grossman on wearable tech to presiding over major projects like the recent Answers Issue, Matt has injected his sophisticated, smart sensibility into all areas of TIME. In his new role, Matt will oversee an expanded business and technology unit and develop new features for digital and print. Matt joined us from Fortune and has worked at AOL and Out. A native of France and the U.S., he started his career in journalism in the Paris bureau of Businessweek. He is proud to follow in Michael Duffy's footsteps as a graduate of Oberlin College, where he studied Philosophy.

Kelly Conniff is promoted to Senior Editor, Special Projects. Kelly, with Susanna Schrobsdorff, has expanded our coverage of lifestyle topics over the last six months producing stories that are smart, viral and unique. Her steady judgment and digital expertise have helped to make many of our most important franchises successful on every platform. In her new role, she will continue to manage special projects while also overseeing the Living and Newsfeed sections with Olivia Waxman's invaluable assistance.

Mia Tramz is promoted to Multimedia Editor. In her new role, she will serve as Jonathan Woods' deputy, overseeing day-to-day photo editing on Time.com while playing a key role in our growing collaboration between the photo, video and interactive teams. For the last two years, Mia has led our visual coverage of space, science, ideas, health and living online. Most recently, she produced Deep Dive, TIME's first 360° underwater video. She first joined TIME as a freelance photo editor before making the transition to associate photo editor last year. A native of California, Mia attended Columbia University, where she majored in Visual Art with a focus on photography.

Daniel D'Addario joins TIME as a Staff Writer covering culture. A creative critic and provocative interviewer, Dan joins us from Salon, where he was a culture reporter. In fact, this is a return to TIME for Dan; he was an editorial intern in 2007, working with Belinda Luscombe and Andrea Sachs. Previously, Dan was on staff at the New York Observer, where he wrote cover stories on subjects from Michelle Obama to Kathie Lee Gifford to Al Sharpton. He has also written for The New Republic, Slate and Bloomberg Businessweek, among others. Dan graduated from Columbia, where he studied American Studies and English. He starts October 2.

Please join me in congratulating Matt, Sam, Kelly and Mia and welcoming Dan back to TIME.
