David Brock, the self-described reformed right-wing hitman who reinvented himself as a leading operative on the political left, is recovering from a heart attack he suffered early Tuesday morning, according to a statement from his chief of staff.

Brock had the heart attack while working in the Washington office of his non-profit groups Media Matters and American Bridge, and was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he “received prompt medical treatment,” according to the statement from Bradley Beychok.

“We are looking forward to a swift recovery,” Beychok said in the statement, thanking the doctors and staff who treated Brock and asking for privacy as he recovers.

Brock, who emerged as a key but controversial figure in Hillary Clinton’s unsuccessful presidential campaign, had been preparing to deliver a Wednesday afternoon presentation on the sidelines of a Washington conference organized by the Democracy Alliance, a major liberal donor club.
