The House Republican Steering Committee tapped Texas Rep. Kevin Brady as the next chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, according to multiple sources familiar with the decision.

Brady bested Ohio Rep. Pat Tiberi to succeed Paul Ryan as head of the powerful tax-writing committee.

The House Republican Conference must ratify the decision, but that is considered a formality.

Brady, an 18-year veteran of Congress, is the seventh chairman from the state of Texas. The Lone Star State also has the chairmanships of the Agriculture, Homeland Security, Rules, Armed Services, Financial Services and Science committees.
